Video codec x264 versus h264: a test

To produce a video is a long journey.You learn many things, and when you learn the features you discover aren't enogh, or the size is too big.

So you start reading about codecs, and how to use it.

H264: you find only it's a standard. But only apple has codecs to encode. To decode is easy: just install quicktime. If you want to encode, pay for the pro version.

As i did it, and i'm really happy.

But you can use in avi files x264. What's the problem ?

x264 is not spread as h264.

So even if your vlc player can read it, if you put online it will be difficult to convert on other formats, as flv for example.

Even if you want your reader play it, they won't be able to play, without the codec.

It's really efficient. It compress a lot, and the quality is really better.

Older codecs are divx, xvid, mpeg. They are really old, remember.

So the solutions is only h264. For a good reason: works on iTunes, iPod, AppleTv, and mobile phones.

Just a note: it seems blip uses h264. So the quality is higher.

And remember: on quick time, when exporting the file, choose options, video setup and set data speed with a value between 250 and 750. This is the most important setting to reduce the size of your file.

sto facendo mille prove con i codec, per arrivare ad un buon compromesso
qualità dimensioni con windows.

Con Mac e' facile, imovie fa tutto.

Ti mando in allegato un file che probabilmente vedrai solo con VLC media
player, se installi il codec x264

E' un codec free, open source, della qualità di h264.

Pare che il problema della migliore qualità di blip rispetto agli stessi
video di youtube risieda nel codec usato. Dicono che su Blip.tv sia
h264, su youtube h263, a meno che non stiano riconvertendo tutto in h264.
